Hey, Tunedgers!
The best music licensing company wants to wish all the amazing dads in the world a Happy Father’s Day!
Did you know Father’s Day gets its historical origins from two different tales told throughout time?
The first story tells of the celebration started by Sonora Smart Dodd that took place in Washington State on June 19, 1910. Sonora woman whose dad, William smart was a Civil War Veteran, came up with the idea of celebrating her Father while listening to a Sunday morning sermon the year before. She believe Mothers were being honored, while Fathers were somewhat overlooked.
William Smart became a widower when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. The civil war hero raised his sixth children as a single parent alone. Sonoma’s Father originally died June 5th, but the memorial started a tradition that would be recognized on the anniversary three weeks after William Smart’s death.
Across the country, two years earlier in Fairmont, West Virginia in 1908, Grace Golden Clayton told a local Methodist congregation they should host a special celebration for fathers after the deadly Monongah mining explosion killed 361 men. Of those men, 250 were fathers and Grace’s dad was among the dead. Some argue this is the event that can be traced to the start of Father’s Day.
The origins of Father’s Day can be debated, but the official holiday and it’s importance cannot. The 37th President of the United States, Richard Nixon, declared it a national holiday in 1972.
Like Williams Smart, the 250 Monongah fathers, and the dads who lost lives serving their families and country who must never be forgotten, let us always remember this special day.
Let us celebrate the special men in our lives this day and every day. Who will you honor this 2017 Father’s Day?
